OPENINGS

Trust and Estate Planning Lateral Attorney or Attorney Group – Boston, MA or Manchester, NH:

Sheehan Phinney is seeking a lateral attorney or attorney group to join our reputable Trust and Estate Planning practice, based primarily from Sheehan’s Boston, MA or Manchester, NH locations. The position(s) requires extensive drafting of core and complex estate planning and probate expertise, providing for high-net-worth clients’ asset protection, and minimizing income tax, gift tax, and estate tax consequences.

Unlike most large law firms, Sheehan Phinney does not hire a large associate class each year. We generally hire a few new associates instead, most of whom are graduates of our highly selective summer program. We commit to train and help them develop the full complement of skills that will assist them in becoming the next generation of exceptional Sheehan Phinney partners.

As a Sheehan Phinney associate, you will work closely with partners and clients, developing, among other things, strong interpersonal skills. Through training, editing, and experience, you will also hone your analytical, writing, oral advocacy, negotiating and client-development abilities. You will be assigned a mentor who will guide your progress in these areas and help to manage your workflow. You will be given as much responsibility as you can effectively handle – mindful of the fact that your colleagues’ doors are always open, and that our culture fosters and encourages collaboration and the sharing of ideas and strategies.

Sheehan Phinney associates are expected to bill 1700 hours per year, to be a member of at least one board or community service organization that complements your personal interests, and to write articles, or to serve as a continuing legal education panelist in a relevant field. We strive to become fully integrated into our communities, and we actively support you in this regard by helping you through sponsoring community events, finding suitable board positions, or volunteer opportunities to complement your interests.

The commitment to work-life balance is also a critical component of our culture at Sheehan Phinney. While we work hard and are committed to providing the best legal services to our clients, we also take pride in the time we spend with our families, coaching children’s’ sports teams, pursuing hobbies and other interests, traveling, and being involved in our communities.

At Sheehan Phinney, associates become eligible for partnership consideration after completing their seventh year at the firm (which includes credit given for eligible judicial clerkships). Although we select very few new associates each year, we do so with the commitment to develop the best lawyers and the expectation that our associates will become partners.

Sheehan Phinney is home to a very skilled and experienced staff. Our paralegals provide a high level of assistance to our attorneys and to our clients.

We strive to provide all our staff with a good working environment and to be as technologically advanced as possible. We promote a work/life balance and encourage all employees to participate in the communities in which they live and work. Our salaries are competitive with other northern New England firms and our current benefits include medical, dental, life and disability insurances and profit-sharing plans.

Sheehan Phinney is a regional law firm which combines challenging legal work with a great work/family balance, community involvement, and an outstanding quality of life.

Sheehan Phinney generally hires a handful of associate attorneys each year, almost exclusively from our 2L summer associate program. Our screening of potential hires occurs during a rigorous process that involves a careful review of the candidate’s academic record in college and law school, scrutiny of a required legal writing sample, and thorough interviews with every member of our Hiring Committee. There is a regular position of employment available to be earned by every member of each Sheehan Phinney 2L summer associate class and, as such, our summer program features a cooperative and collegial environment that allows summer associates to flourish.

First-Year Students:
The firm occasionally hires 1L students for summer internships. Interested students should contact the Associate Hiring Partner.

Second-Year Students:
2Ls with a superior academic record in college and law school and a serious interest in living and working in New Hampshire or Massachusetts following their graduation from law school are encouraged to submit a cover letter, resume, undergraduate transcript, law school transcript, and writing sample to our hiring partner by mid-June before the start of their 2L year.

Third-Year Students:
Because we generally fill entry-level attorney positions from our summer program, we do not conduct a formal 3L-hiring program. Exceptional 3L candidates may still apply.
