Practice Focus

Peter is the head of the firm's Patent Law and Intellectual Property and Technology Groups. He is an experienced patent attorney whose unique practice focuses on many aspects of intellectual property, including domestic and foreign preparation and prosecution of patents, domestic and foreign preparation and prosecution of trademarks, protection and enforcement of copyrights, and disputes/litigation concerning patents and trademarks.

Peter specializes in the management of global intellectual property portfolios (e.g., patent portfolios) for small, medium, and large corporations, while allowing clients to benefit from long relationships with foreign agents that maintain decreased rates due to such relationships. He also negotiates and handles patent licenses, counseling on intellectual property strategies, and intellectual property due diligence in connection with mergers and acquisitions. Peter regularly counsels clients and renders opinions concerning the patentability of ideas, infringement/noninfringement of patents, the validity/invalidity of patents, trademark protection and non-infringement, and the design of products and processes to avoid potential infringement assertions.

Peter’s prosecution experience encompasses a vast range of electrical and electromechanical technologies, mechanical technologies, medical devices, chemical and material technologies, and proper protection of functionality associated with software. Peter has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patents in these areas of technology and related areas.

Peter has consistently been recognized by New England Super Lawyers in the area of Intellectual Property since 2009. Managing Intellectual Property Magazine has named Sheehan Phinney as the Intellectual Property, Tier 1, High Recommended law firm in New Hampshire every year since 2013. Peter was individually recognized as an IP Star for his individual contributions and recognition within the intellectual property field. Sheehan Phinney’s Intellectual Property Group was named Intellectual Property 2013 Law Firm of the Year by Corporate International Magazine. He was selected among 39 emerging and established community leaders selected for the 2012 class of Leadership New Hampshire. Peter was honored by the U.S. Small Business Administration as the 2012 New Hampshire and New England Minority Small business Champion at its Awards Luncheon on May 17, 2012. He was selected among the inaugural winners of the 2011 Top Patent Prosecutors, one of the only two in New Hampshire. Also in 2011, Peter was named as one of the Top Patent Prosecutors by Patent Buddy, in cooperation with the Patent Research Review, a publication of Sunlight Research. In 2007, Peter was named to New Hampshire Union Leader's 40 Under Forty List.

Memberships and Admissions

Peter is a member of the Intellectual Property Law section of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the New Hampshire Bar Association, the Georgia Bar Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and Latinos On The Move. He is licensed to practice in the state of Georgia and the state of New Hampshire, and is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the state of Georgia and the state of New Hampshire, as well as the Court of Appeals of the State of Georgia. In addition, Peter is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Community Involvement

Peter is a committee member of the MIT Enterprise Forum®, a Board Member of the Inventor's Association of New England, a Board Member of Natural Entrepreneur of New Hampshire and donates time to lecturing groups of inventors and entrepreneurs on intellectual property law. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Franklin Pierce Law Center (UNH School of Law) in Concord, NH, and has assisted in teaching courses at the Tuck and Thayer schools at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. Peter is also a Board Member for the Friends of CHAD.
