Practice Focus
Ted has been a member of the Estate Planning and Probate Group since joining Sheehan Phinney in 1988. His estate practice deals with planning, trust administration and taxation issues. Prior to joining Sheehan Phinney, Ted practiced in the Estate Planning Department at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago for eight years.
- Works with clients and their accountants, insurance agents and financial planners to develop tax-efficient plans for the disposition of family assets at death through the use of marital deduction and generation-skipping tax planning, business succession planning, irrevocable insurance trusts and charitable trusts.
- Assists clients in the development and implementation of lifetime gifting programs and other strategies relating to the preservation, management and transfer of wealth, including:
utilization of various estate planning and business planning devices such as qualified personal residence trusts, charitable split-interest trusts, generation-skipping trusts, family limited partnerships, limited liability companies and shareholder agreements, qualified plan distribution and beneficiary designation planning, negotiating and drafting antenuptial agreements, preparing gift tax returns.

- Provides postmortem guidance to fiduciaries and beneficiaries with respect to tax elections, the funding of marital and credit shelter trusts, the timing of distributions to beneficiaries and the use of disclaimers to take advantage of estate tax deductions and credits that would otherwise be wasted.
- Represents estates in estate tax audits involving valuation and other issues.
