(July 21, 2004. Manchester, NH.) - Attorneys Katherine M. Hanna and Melissa A. Leaver of the Healthcare Practice Group at Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green, PA were recognized in healthynh.com for providing pro bono legal support to the Health Care Decisions Coalition. The Coalition is focused on improving the Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare and Living Will laws, which are more than a decade old. Since their passage, significant changes in health care practice have enhanced the population's understanding of how to help people make these decisions. This effort grew out of the hearings and report of the special Legislative Committee on End-of-Life Care that was established last year. The Coalition will be seeking sponsors for the proposed law in the next legislative session that starts in January 2005.
Attorney Hanna has represented more than half of the state's hospitals in several capacities, including as general and special counsel. She advises hospitals on licensure and regulatory matters; medical staff and patient care issues; physician recruitment and contracting; compliance with HIPAA, EMTALA, Stark and fraud and abuse (anti-kickback) laws; employment issues; and insurance coverage questions. She also serves as counsel to nursing homes, physician practices, and individual physicians and nurse practitioners.
Ms. Leaver has focused her practice entirely on Healthcare Law. She assists as general counsel to New Hampshire hospitals, health care institutions and professional practices in the areas of: litigation management, Medical Staff bylaws, patient care issues, contract drafting and negotiation, institutional review board protocols, insurance coverage disputes, and federal and state compliance issues. Ms. Leaver has developed particular expertise in EMTALA.
