Perten has been honored by Babson College with the Deans' Award for Excellence in Teaching by an adjunct professor at the College. This award is given each year to someone who excels in innovative and effective teaching even while holding a ‘day job.'
Perten has been an adjunct professor with Babson since 2002 and currently teaches a graduate level course entitled "Managing the Legal Environment of Business." In recognizing Perten with the Deans' Award, Carolyn Hotchkiss, Dean of Faculty and Professor of Law, noted "the nominations for this award remarked on John's dedication to Babson, his flexibility in helping us to meet our needs, including kicking off classes in our downtown Boston location, and his interest in course development and helping colleagues in Babson programs." She added "Even more importantly, John has a consistent history of excellent teaching. His student evaluations show his clear connection with his students. John is someone who Babson recognizes as a role model not just for other adjunct faculty at the College, but for all of us."
Perten works from Sheehan Phinney's Boston office where he has a complex business litigation and transactional law practice. He provides representation to clients in a wide variety of settings including construction projects, business transactions, real estate ventures, bankruptcy and environmental remediation projects. In addition to serving as an adjunct faculty member at Babson College, he is also a member of the Builders Association of Greater Boston, a former Town Counsel for the Town of Maynard, MA and Special Town Counsel for the Town of Wayland, MA. He received his J.D., cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School.
