(January 26, 2006. Boston, MA.) - Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green is proud to announce that attorneys John H. Perten and Walter M. Foster have joined the firm, of counsel. The two attorneys bring a wealth of experience to the firm in the fields of employment, construction and business law.
Joseph DiBrigida, president and managing director of Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green in Manchester, said the firm is committed to expanding its Massachusetts presence through the addition of top-flight, experienced attorneys. "Walter Foster and John Perten bring to our Boston office additional capabilities and depth. We are pleased to have such seasoned and talented attorneys on board," DiBrigida said.
Foster has an extensive background in employment law and business litigation, and he provides counsel to private and public sector employers on the legal and regulatory standards that govern the modern workplace. His public sector clients include the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority.
Foster was an assistant attorney general in Massachusetts, defending numerous state agencies and departments in administrative law appeals. He has appeared on several occasions before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on constitutional issues including a cases involving the right of a jury trial in discrimination law cases.
He is also an experienced trial attorney who has handled numerous jury trials and public hearings before the U.S. District Court, Massachusetts District, the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission,as well as state l courts involving claims of sexual harassment, disability, race, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation and religious discrimination.
Foster graduated, cum laude, from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and the Columbia University School of Law in New York City.
Perten's practice focuses on complex business and litigation matters. He counsels clients in both the private and public sector on a broad spectrum of issues relating to construction projects, business transactions and real estate ventures. He also represents businesses and individuals on a variety of transactional matters.
A significant portion of Perten's practice is devoted to servicing the construction industry for which he frequently negotiates contracts, prosecutes and defends payment disputes, change order controversies and lien claims. He is a frequent writer and lecturer on issues of interest to the construction industry. He holds a Construction Document Technologist (CDT) certification from the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and is a member of the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) and the Builders Association of Greater Boston (BAGB).
Some of Perten's past representation include negotiating a $10 million contract for the construction of a new hotel, winning a $360,000 arbitration award against a site contractor who abandoned a job following the reduction of a payment requisition and successfully defending a multi-million dollar arbitration between partners in a bicoastal student travel agency.
Perten is also an adjunct faculty member at Babson College in Wellesley, where he teaches a course entitled "Foundations of Business Law."
He is a graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. and Suffolk University Law School, cum laude, in Boston.
Both attorneys are also active in their communities. Foster is serving his second term as a selectman for the town of Acton and is a member of the local Community Preservation Committee and other town boards. Perten served as chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the town of Wayland, town counsel for the Town of Maynard and coaches soccer in the Wayland Youth Soccer league.
