(October 23, 2009, Manchester, NH) - Peter A. Nieves, a shareholder with the law firm of Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green PA, will be among the faculty for the graduate course Medical Device Development presented by the Tuck School of Business and Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College.
The course, Medical Device Development, provides an overview of existing medical devices and discusses methods for development, evaluation, and approval of new medical devices. The course covers both diagnostic and interventional devices, and covers clinical and pre-clinical testing issues, as well as providing discussions of FDA approval processes, funding startups, and cost effectiveness analysis. The course involves several case studies as examples. Graduate students in the course work in teams to analyze needs in a medical setting and derive a plan for a new medical device, and analyze how best to develop the device with a new startup.
Nieves will be teaching on the effects of intellectual property in the Medical Device industry. Specifically, Nieves will focus on the effects of patents in the Medical Device industry. His presentation will cover the basics of patent law, statutory bars, domestic vs. foreign patent protection and costs, different categories of patent protection, how to address recent case law, and other patent law related topics.
Nieves is a patent attorney, whose practice focuses on many aspects of intellectual property, including domestic and foreign preparation and prosecution of patents, domestic and foreign preparation and prosecution of trademarks, licensing, and disputes concerning patents, trademarks, copyrights and domain names. He speaks regularly at Dartmouth College in the Tuck School of Business and the Thayer School of Engineering.
